Tufted Duck – Aythya fuligula

Tufted Ducks winter in Switzerland. This year beginning of march I was able to watch parts of their courtship display. Now, by the end of march, most of them are gone to breed further north.

The male has a crest or tuft, that gives them their name. The white sides make them easy to identify:

They also have a white belly:

The female is brownish but has also the yellow eye. I took this picture with the chicks in London.
